At five and six years old, my students need to be able to wiggle and move in order to help them learn. Sitting in a chair throughout the school day can become quite difficult for them, really for any of us. We all have different ways of learning and we all have different needs when it comes to finding a comfortable environment in which to learn. Allowing students to choose flexible seating options such as, wobble stools and cushions, is a way for them to take ownership of, and become more responsible for, their own learning. Wobble stools and cushions, comfortable bean bag chairs, tactile pillows, and portable lap desks/writing desks will allow the students to be able to work in multiple areas around the classroom, not just sitting in a chair at a common table. Research shows that when used correctly, flexible seating options can be extremely beneficial for student learning. I would love to have these resources in my classroom and be able to see the impact that it has on my students!
