This year I've decided to try to start the first ever Topsail High School Interscholastic Chess Team. The goal, over the next three years, is to seek accreditation through the United States Chess Federation (USCF), host county-wide tournaments, host rated USCF tournaments, and, finally, secure enough funding to be able to compete in tournaments across North Carolina and the Southeastern United States.
Your donation will directly assist students in their training and ability to play chess at a competitive level. The first major obstacle in our journey is to raise enough money to purchase chess boards and clocks with which to train and eventually compete. Donations will go to the purchase of 20 digital chess clocks and 5 boards—I've already requisitioned 15 playable tournament boards on my own.
The ultimate goal is to secure funding through the county and the USCF to have the Chess Team recognized and funded as an interscholastic sport. However, in order to convince the community that chess is a worthwhile addition to the curriculum, we must first show the community what is possible.
