When my students were introduced to a caring for baby chickens, they loved it! It was amazing how much they were able to learn in a short period of time. Because of this, I would like to create an area in our school garden to care for chickens beyond the chick phase. To accomplish this, we will need a coop, where the chickens can live and feeding/watering dispensers and food for them to eat. Agriculture is a great field for children to study and can teach children to run a partially self-sufficient lifestyles. Examples of lessons that can be used within our chicken operation can vary through reading about how to care for chickens, understanding the similarities in the life cycle of other organisms, and budgeting to allocate financial resources for raising the birds. The best thing is that when live animals are involved, children can attach a special memory to their learning while learning to be responsible young humans. A chicken coop would a wonderful addition to our outdoor learning space.
