Budgeting and the arts have rarely worked well together. However, studies have shown that the arts are one of the strongest disciplines in teaching creative thought, building communication skills, and developing reflection and evaluation skills. Unfortunately, the history of budget cuts and underfunding the arts has affected our building in a major way. For a number of years the funding cut visual arts out completely and have only, in the past four years, re-introduced programing in a minimal capacity. We have built the program up slowly but have struggled to collect even the most basic supplies. Thankfully, the decision has been made to allow the program to grow to fund a full-time position with the ability to reach more students. The challenge is still that additional funds for supplies have not been made available.
