Funding of this project would allow my students to create sensory bags to provide firefighters and paramedics to have when responding to a scene involving someone on the autism spectrum. They will also place "Calming Bags" in the district’s schools. The sensory bags will contain items to keep the person's hands busy, reduce the noise around them, and even to help them communicate with first responders, teachers or counselors. As a teacher it allows me to realize the importance of communication with all verbal and non-verbal students and adults. It helps to determine the needs in our classroom and community vary from one to another.
