Sensory integration is vital in an elementary special education program. My students, who have a variety of disabilities, can benefit from sensory integration throughout their school day. These range from visual, auditory, tactile, taste, and smell. With the materials on my list, my students would be given a calming area within my classroom that would allow them a space to visit when they are in need of sensory/motor regulation. This area of the room would be an area where they can self-regulate their emotions or senses. The hope is that this will allow them to have an appropriate level of alertness so that they can function throughout their school day. It gives students a space that they can come to and be comfortable in while helping to regulate themselves. The ultimate result would be that they can rejoin their class in a much calmer mood, thus helping them achieve more academic success.
