Too often, English learners learn to socialize effectively in English and then they fall behind in their ability to command Tier 2, Academic Language. Language experts have increasingly imparted a sense of urgency on educators for growing our students' ability to use formal language. Tier 2 language will not only help my students access challenging text now, but will enable them to navigate college and the workforce in their near futures.
A personalized Time magazine subscription for each ELD student, will allow me to promote independent reading for pleasure, while covertly beefing up my students' ability to alternate between language registers in formal and informal settings. This will also expose my students to the English language in the context of relevant, current events.
It is not enough for my students to learn to communicate about basic every day tasks. They have to contend with the common core, applying for work, voting and so on. I need to give them access to high-interest text that pushes them beyond their Lexile- levels, but remains accessible. A subscription to Teen Time magazine would meet them at their zone of proximal development. Thank you for reading!
