My middle school math students work hard in class. But, they are also full of energy. Sitting in a seat all day long is hard for many of the students. My students do not have a recess period and they have physical education only every other day. Therefore, I see many students fidgeting in their seats because they have this pent up energy. By using flexible seating, the students would have some opportunities to sit elsewhere in the classroom during independent and group work. Chair bands would provide opportunities for movement. When students are moving when they are working, this would allow them to focus better and develop a deeper understanding of the material being taught. Providing opportunities for movement will also lead to healthier and happier students.
