Soil, window boxes, and vegetable seeds will give my city students the opportunity to become gardeners. They will sort seeds, observe how they are similar and different, and learn how to plant and water them. The children will get to observe the growth of carrots, peppers, cucumbers, kale, lettuce, and peas. The children will learn that although plants look different, they share features like roots, stems, leaves, flowers, and fruits. Urban second graders, many who live in apartments, will experience the wonder of growing their own vegetables for the first time! I hope to foster an understanding of how plants grow while exposing children to healthy vegetables. I also hope to instill a love of gardening, and to show that large outdoor areas are not necessary to have a great relationship with plants!
