My school serves a high-needs population of children and it always feels as though there simply isn't enough money to fund the things and experiences we'd love to provide for our students. With the addition of an iPad to my toolkit for reaching students and families wherever they are in their educational journey, I would be able to provide a more customizable approach to delivering the Reading Comprehension and Language Arts skills my students need to be proficient readers and writers. One example of how I would use this tool in my classroom is by conducting something called a "running record" on the iPad. The way it works is, I share my screen with the student and ask them to read a selection of text to me out loud. With the iPad, I can write directly on the screen as they are reading and real-time track any mistakes or mispronunciations they have during the live read. When they're done, the student and I can go back and analyze their mistakes and create a plan for improvement. They can also take the iPad and self-administer the running record with a partner and take turns practicing the skill of fluency with each other once the restrictions on social distancing have let up.
