Middle school students need far more than academic skills, in this new age of social media and wifi preteen students need to learn and further develop social skills. Cooperative learning provides a foundation for students to positively and meaningfully interact with their peers while learning content in an academic setting. Grouped seating will allow for successful implementation of cooperative learning which will lead to healthy social interactions between students. By eliminating single student desks and placing students at tables in small groups, students will have constant and continued interaction throughout the lesson. Students will have social exchanges face to face, not from behind a computer or phone. These interactions may be simple pleasantries or they may be content specific debates, the possibilities are endless.
