Our students are often suffering from hunger, abuse, neglect, poverty etc. Some of them need a place to process their emotions and having a space that they can feel safe and comfortable in makes a huge difference. When a student explodes, it's often because they have no place to process their emotions safely. The current room has some supplies in it, thanks to the teachers and staff donating household items however without the funding we can only do so much! Objects that are "sensory safe" such as weighted blankets, WiggleSeat, Fidget Toys, Modeling Putty, Liquid Motion Bubblers, and weighted stuffed animals will help our kiddos come down from emotionally tumultuous situations and prevent meltdowns before they happen. Our "calm down" room has proven to be effective and many of our ESE students (Exeptional Student Education) of varying levels (independent, supported, participatory etc.) AND some general education students have been able to express that they "just need a minute", when before they would either leave the room or engage in other maladaptive coping skills.
