While education inside the classroom is important, education outside the classroom is equally as important. As a tier one middle school in the Bronx, many students are faced with personal challenges, both mentally and emotionally, that can negatively effect them in the classroom. MTCS has provided an outlet as well as an opportunity for students to apply real world learning outside the classroom that will also help benefit their social-emotional development. We are participating in an urban farming program where general/special educations students, as well as "at-risk" students help care for 3 hungry, egg-laying chickens outside our school as a de-escalation and accountability measure aligned to our schools student support initiatives! We have had these chickens for the past two school years, so students have developed a very close and special bond with them. They have given each of the chickens names (Lily, Nugget, and Beauty), and show much enthusiasm when visiting them. At this time, I am the Lead/only teacher taking on the responsibility of caring for these chickens. We are in need of chicken feed to continue caring properly for them. Please help us continue to provide the opportunity to participate in our urban farming program successfully!
