Kindergarten students come to school with boundless energy and curiosity about the world around them. Some of my students have never been to preschool which means that kindergarten is their first experience in a classroom environment. Sitting still long enough to learn a new concept can be very difficult for these young learners. Chair bands help students focus their attention on learning while fidgeting and moving their feet. These bands will help their attention spans increase and they will be able to wiggle and move without distracting their peers. Many of my students have had very little exposure to activities requiring the use of fine motor skills and struggle with holding pencils, crayons and scissors. I have several left-handed students in my class who express frustration when trying to cut paper with the scissors provided by the school. Pencil grips, tweezers, scoopers and left-handed scissors are extremely useful in helping students build strength, control and dexterity. The scoopers and tweezers are not only beneficial for fine-motor development but can also be used in activities such as counting and sorting. A large part of learning in kindergarten happens through play and social interaction. A portion of our day is spent cultivating oral language skills through pretend play. Puppets are an excellent way for children to explore new vocabulary and build on their oral language skills. Community helpers are a big part of our kindergarten curriculum and community helper puppets will give students the opportunity to practice vocabulary from the stories we read. Students will also be able to use the puppets to retell stories and increase their comprehension. Puppets provide limitless opportunities for creativity and my students will love creating new stories and performing puppet shows for their peers.
