"The more we stimulate children and encourage communication, the better off we are going to be."- Linda Hurwitz As one of the major developmental tasks in early childhood education is to teach children how to to communicate. As an educator, one of my main goals is to encourage and teach my preschoolers to know how to interact with others so their needs are met. This means, communication development includes gaining the skills to understand and to express thoughts, feelings, and information. These days, I am seeing more and more students coming into school that have learning difficulties and some are ADHD. Having a play house outside at our preschool playground will allow me to model, role play and create hands on learning lesson where my students, especially my special need students who are ADHD will be be able to use cooperative play, to learn how to take turns, share responsibility, and creatively problem-solve. When your child pretends to be different characters, he/she has the experience of "walking in someone else's shoes," which helps teach the important moral development skill of empathy. This will help my most needed students who are ADHD to slow down a little and build better communication skills with others instead of always having to be in a rush. This playhouse will help all my students understand the power of language, problem solve, and build self-esteem as they discover they can be anything by pretending.
