First graders learn through exploration and repetition. Good classroom structure is essential in order to maintain an environment where learning can take place. Each day we have a one hour time block where students break into cooperative learning groups (centers). Students get to practice and explore concepts with their peers that have been introduced or taught to the whole group prior to this time. Hands on games, activities, and manipulatives provide opportunities for learning to take place so students can carry out physical activities, rather than listening to lectures or watching class demonstrations. The products that I have selected will all be used during our centers time. My students will be able to play games to practice our sight words, spelling words, and the language arts concepts we are learning each week. The colored lights will be used to signify that it is time to change center stations. The bins will hold the activities for our stations each day of the week. This project will help enrich our center activities and provide opportunities for kinesthetic learning to occur.
