This is my first year of teaching and I am eager to get my hands on materials that will help my students learn the new curriculum. My students learn best through visual stimulation as well as hands-on interaction. When my students work with math manipulatives they are able to better understand the concepts and algorithms that they are being taught. Manipulatives help students comprehend new concepts that are challenging to understand. These manipulatives will help build a connection between something concrete and a physical item. My students will be able to practice addition and subtraction within Base 10 by using the counting disks. The dice will be useful as students practice adding and subtracting double-digit numbers. The plastic coins give the students experience adding up the totals of various coin combinations. Time is another concept that is challenging for students. The lapse timer helps students develop an understanding of how fast time passes as well as providing an easy-to-see visual display for students who need that visual support. The large clock will be a useful tool during whole class instruction and can be easily manipulated and changed to show a variety of times. In second grade, students are introduced to geometry and practice identifying shapes. The wooden shapes will give me the opportunity to work with students so they can quickly identify shapes.
