My students already enjoy sitting at the listening center each day. I already have the means to make this happen with headphones and a CD player. They are anxious for their turn to sit and focus on a good book and tuning out everything else around them. It is a great experience for both novice and developmental readers because they can follow along with the narrator. I have a great variety of fiction books already but am lacking in the non-fiction genre. They are naturally curious about the world around them and the people who live in it. They need more experiences with biographies and texts about animal life and learning to read to gather information by looking closely at text features such as diagrams, maps, charts and new vocabulary words to help them find answers to questions they have and make them curious to read more!
