The last few years my step team All-Star Girls has been working on expressing themselves through rhythms and beats. One of the greatest struggles we have faced has been keeping the rhythm of the step and keeping the words to our chants on beat. The skin on the drum that I had originally set out to use tore before I could use it. So, the last 3 years I have been patting my lap to keep the beat, which is not easy to hear in a group of 20 girls. My program is built on echoing and it can be a challenge to hear my stomps and pats. These drums will not only make it easier for my coaches to play a beat, they will also be used by the girls. Expression is the best way to cope with challenges and communicate feelings. With these drums the girls will get a chance to lead the group, express themselves, and get creative. My goal for this year is to give this team the opportunity to create their own beat and step as a team while encouraging individuality. This years routine will include stepping, dancing and beating of these drums, a captivating combination.
