6th grade math core includes finding that area of rectangles, triangles, parallelograms, and trapezoids. Once the students have mastered that, they learn to apply what they know about area to find the area of solid surface figures such as prisms and pyramids. Often students cannot see that pyramids and prisms are made up of parallelograms and triangles and this is where geometric manipulatives come in handy! Students can break apart a square, triangular, or rectangular pyramid, a triangular or rectangular prism manipulative to be able to see what measurements are to be calculated. The white boards show me their work in real time.
