I would love to increase students' understanding of mathematics. This is so needed right now with the STEM boost. Generally, students in the 6th grade do not like math and believe they are not good at it. It is because the manipulatives are taken away. I strongly believe the CRA model is the best. This stands for concrete, representational, and abstract. Too often, the concrete - manipulatives - is taken away from the 6th grade students and they need this to understand the concepts. I am asking for a class set of algebra tiles, a geometry shape kit with activity cards and protractors, pattern blocks, ETA hand2mind Plastic Rainbow Fraction and Decimal Tiles, and some ETA hand2mind Plastic Centimeter Cubes. I see my students' understanding of math increase when I use the manipulatives I already have but I need more manipulatives. The students will benefit from this because they will be able to visually see an algebraic expression come to life. When teaching adding like terms, I will first have them use the algebra tiles which are different shapes and they will see you cannot add different shapes together. I will use the fraction tiles so the students will see that 1/4 is less than 1/2. I will use the centimeter cubes to show volume. We will use a cup and fill it with cubes. I will use the anglegs to show perimeter and the cubes would show area. I will use pattern blocks to show that trapezoids are made of different shapes - shapes they are familiar with. My main goal is for students to have a better understanding of math as it is used in the world around them.
