My students attend an underprivileged school. The film 'Waiting for Superman' described school as a "dropout factory", and there is truth in that more than 50% of our Freshman do not finish four years later. However, my students are not dropping out because they do not want a college education, and do not have dreams, it is because they have been attending under-served and under resourced schools since elementary school. My students lack many skills, but they do not lack dreams and goals! Our youth recognize that we are in a crisis, and that there are many needs and issues in and out of school that need to be addressed. My students are full of energy and are passionate about being part of the change and solution. Our school has school clubs that advocate for change, such as the CARE-Taking Action Club, Immigrant Youth Club, United Students, and Art Club. Student from the clubs and from my classes are motivated to create an event for community members.
