As a Dual Language Immersion (DLI) classroom, hands-on learning is vital because students are being taught curriculum content in a language different than their native language. It has also been proven that exposure to authentic materials provides a better environment for second language acquisition. As a Portuguese elementary teacher, I financially struggle to purchase enough engaging material for hands-on activities in science. This grant would allow the purchase of age appropriate quality tools and equipment to support hands-on student learning of the science curriculum in 5th grade. It will also provide me with a unique opportunity to enrich my students’ minds in new and engaging ways.
