Apple iPads allow students to combine digital forms of learning with classical themes of art production. Today's students have grown up with tablets and smart devices. Technology is how children communicate not just thoughts and ideas but images as well. Apple iPads allow students versatile and innovative ways to produce art while capitalizing on the digital learners strengths. The use of iPads in the visual art classroom will make instruction relevant and meaningful to today's students while allowing the classroom to become a deep well of innovation and creativity. Art today is so much more than paint brushes and pencils on paper. There are a number of applications that allows students to explore both traditional forms of art production as well as more modern ways of producing compositions. The application ProCreate mimics classical art media and tools when combined with a stylus. The Application Adobe Lightroom allows students to manipulate photographs as professionals do. These skills combine to create a digitally and classically competent artist that can produce works in the style of a 21st century learner while preparing themselves to also be globally competitive in fields of the visual arts in the work force. The amount of ways the iPads can be used in the art classroom include (but are not limited to) doing mobile digital sketches in and out of the classroom while taking notes, finding reference images for projects, exploring concepts and media in art in a new and innovative way, building digital competency and visual literacy, creating final works of art for use in college portfolios and art competitions, and allows students a way to integrate art and technology to produce modern works in a modern way.
