At our school, we don't send out a list of all the expected items students should bring. We focus on making each student feel that school is equitable, accessible, and welcoming to them and their families. On the first day, I want my class to walk into a room that inspires independence, collaboration, and inclusivity. I am asking for the fundamental materials in order to provide my students with such a space. Below, I have detailed how the materials will be used by the students! Students will use the folders to keep their desks organized and quickly access resources for independent work. The notebooks will be used for our newly implemented science curriculum- a curiosity journal. We use the journal to take note of things we wonder and notice in response to a prompt or picture. We do timed transitions which helps the students with predictability and consistency, a key factor when serving our demographic of students. Another part of our curriculum is teaching students keyboarding and computer skills. Having access to headphones allows the students to be focused on the programing and to use their home languages for instruction if they would be more successful utilizing that feature. Lapboards help to provide students with a flexible work space and also makes participating in lessons more engaging and equitable, considering that so many of my students process at different speeds and in different capacities (visually, auditory, using writing to help them think). Book bins allow students to be responsible for and have quick access to their books, encouraging focus during their independent reading time. Finally, a multitude of pencils and crayons (as well as a sharpener to be able to use them completely) to foster fun and productive work! Thank you for your consideration!
