When asked in science about problems here at school that dealt with soil, my students cited the lack of plants and unused areas around campus. Instantly, the idea of starting a school garden to promote awareness about where our food comes from, what we can do with the "fruits" of our labor, and how we could use waste through composting immediately became the focus of our project-based learning. As a starter garden, my students and I will use the raised garden beds to involve other grade levels in our gardening initiative with the intent to expand the project to involve our school neighborhood. With the raised beds, we can set the framework for our garden by focusing on soil properties- the ability of soil to retain water and support plant life. In math we will explore area and perimeter. Through Texas history and geography in social studies, we can delve into what crops have thrived in this region of Texas over the years. My students have also interviewed our cafeteria manager about what she would like to see in our garden and how compostable waste from the kitchen can be used to provide nourishment to our soil through conservation measures.
