My students who have Autism Spectrum Disorder, Intellectual Disabilities, and Multiple Disabilities are kind, hard-working, funny, and unique. They also face unique challenges in school settings and in life. Individuals with these diagnoses can be under-sensitive or over-sensitive to sensory information such as touch, sight, smell, and sound. They also comprehend information best in visual formats. Many of them have fine motor difficulties which make tasks such as writing and cutting materials challenging. In my classroom, we aim to provide each student with the individualized supports he or she needs to succeed in their academic endeavors as well as in their daily life. Sensory items such as fidget cubes, weighted blankets, and chair leg rubber bands help their minds organize and make sense of the information they are receiving and reduce frustration. Visual supports such as visual timers and liquid timers provide a visual cue for them to know how much time they have left to complete activities throughout their day. Fine motor aids such as adapted scissors allow them to safely learn to cut materials, increasing their independence in class and in their daily lives. In order to provide each student with the unique instruction they require and deserve, we are in need of unique supports. Your contribution to my project will help these incredible individuals achieve their academic goals, gain meaningful employment in the future, and be as independent as possible.
