I recently asked my most reluctant readers what they wanted to read. Several said they like the nonfiction "Who Was..." series. This culturally diverse selection of "Who Was..." books will be used to help students develop a love of reading and also to find heroes with whom they can relate. One student told me that she really did not like reading. When I asked her what it was that she did not like about it she told me that she has a hard time relating to most of the characters in the books she has read. She said, "I really want to read a book that looks like me". These culturally diverse fiction books will help students see themselves in literature increasing their love of reading and ultimately their love of themselves.
