These books will serve the language arts classroom in two principal ways. First, the books in this order are written by a diverse range of authors and tell the stories of a diverse range of characters. For middle schoolers whose worlds are mostly pretty small, reading diverse books is the easiest way to expose these young learners to new perspectives. Also, some students do not feel well represented in the school curriculum or in many books, so it is imperative to offer a range of stories so that each student may find a character or experience that they might relate with. Secondly, reticent readers are most likely to buy-in to a book if it is current and of a genre they find engaging. For this reason I included several horror stories in this selection because middle schoolers largely find this genre intriguing.
