How easy was it for you to divide fractions when you saw them written on paper? How much easier was it to divide a pizza when it came out of the oven? Thus the reason we need a FAMILY AND CONSUMER SCIENCE LAB for "EDIBLE SCIENCE." Exploration learning no doubt provided you with a solid educational experience while you were in elementary and middle school, so let's not ask high school students to trade that hands-on learning experience for sentences and paragraphs without a physical connection to their everyday lives. Science and math are especially hard for some students; however, when I've shown kids how to make their own soda, they've not only learned about carbon dioxide gas, but also the ratio of carbon to oxygen necessary for bubbles. All of my students have grasped the concept of fermentation after watching yeast create its own energy while we baked a delicious loaf of bread. By creating a Family and Consumer Science Lab with appliances and kitchen tools, we help students learn beyond their books. We allow them to apply those math and science skills where it counts, real life!
