Students in my classroom are deep thinking and caring individuals. They are passionate about justice and learning the truth. They are creative beyond my imagination and have a spark for real world issues. They long for real ways to interact with the world and through this unit they are exposed to different attitudes and actions through literature. This type of literature creates opportunity for growth and understanding on a personal level when students engage with characters and are exposed to their thinking and feelings. This school is community driven and as such, after learning about peace war and veterans, students create a celebration to honor veterans in the community. WIth new understanding and a creative base, students create a show and honor local veterans with their writing, and art work. We use guest speakers and non-fiction to inspire students, but fiction allows their imaginations and hearts to soar.
