In order to find and refine their own writing skills, students need engaging, high-interest but equally high-quality literature to use as a model. Joyce Carol Oates is a powerhouse of the contemporary literary world; according to the New York Times, her Pulitzer Prize-nominated novella "takes yesterday's headlines and moves them forward to the present." Students will be absolutely mesmerized by the fast-paced tension of this gripping narrative. Then they will read and model Oates' techniques in a creative writing project in which they will take a historical event of the past and reimagine it in their own lifetime and in their individual voices.
