With this class set "Yaqui Delgado Wants to Kick Your Ass", the students will have a book that makes them want to read. Struggling readers will finally have a protagonist and conflicts that they will be able to relate to, especially with themes of bullying and racial stereotypes. Hispanic students make up a large percentage of our school and I want to give them a modern story with a Latina protagonist that they can relate to. Unfortunately, our school's book collection doesn't have many choices for 8th grade students. Most of our novel selections are either too outdated or have characters and conflicts that are too far from our demographic of students. These novels leave struggling readers disengaged and unenthusiastic. I want to give my students a high interest novel that the students will make the students excited to come to class.
