My students are English language learners who work hard to learn academic concepts at the same time as they are learning new vocabulary. The hands-on experiences help to motivate them as well as aiding them in understanding the new concepts. The California state standards for kindergarten are very stringent and the children and their parents work very hard to master the concepts by the end of the year. They become excited by new information especially when it is accompanied by visuals and manipulatives. The children will have t-shirts to wear to the aquarium that they have painted with ocean environments and ocean animals that they have studied. They will have ocean animal manipulatives and puzzles to reinforce what they have learned and which help to clarify the information for them.
