The students in my classroom struggle with basic reading, phonics skills, reading fluency, spelling, and written expression. In addition, many students are Autistic, have ADHD, and Emotional Disabilities in addition to Learning Disabilities. These students all seem to thrive when books they enjoy are supplemented into the curriculum, but books at their age and reading level are not always accessible to them. My students would benefit from having a library of books in the classroom that will make learning to read fun for them in order to promote growth in the area of reading literacy. I feel it to be essential to have a library of books at their reading level available for them to read in the support classroom. These will keep them interested in reading and allow them to have fun, while also enhancing the fundamental reading skills they need to be successful in school. Struggling readers seem to enjoy and find success with reading books that are at their reading level, rather than simply reading books associated with the curriculum, many of which are too difficult for them. These students also have fun reading aloud to younger students, while still learning the basic reading skills they need. Scholastic books at their reading levels will help supplement the current curriculum and allow my students to work at their grade and ability level while providing them with an instructional and fun break from the tedious daily curriculum. Utilizing these reading materials will teach my students that reading is fun. Reading books at their ability level will help them to feel confident and create success for them. These scholastic books will also help my students to become better readers, teaching them the fundamental reading skills that they will need for the rest of their lives.
