Classroom sets of books will give my students an opportunity to develop of love of reading longer texts and comprehension skills. Traditionally, we use textbooks with a series of short essays or chapters of longer books, but that leaves out the skill of reading a full text and the complexities of a longer story. The real benefit is that students will be able to escape to the same world over a period of a few months while learning how texts work, how stories evolve, and go on a journey in itself. Learning the many facets of writing, evolving stories, and even punctuation through the use of a novel is something every child should experience.
