With the Kill-A-Watt meters students will be able to determine how much energy difference devices and appliances use. Energy can be a difficult topic as it is abstract and cannot be seen or felt. With the meters, students will measure the energy consumed by items such as their phone chargers, strands of Christmas tree lights, microwaves, fans, space heaters, hair dryers, and televisions. These measurements help connect the concept of energy to the real world as they see how much energy they consume in their everyday lives. Students will compare standard devices to LED and Energy Star rated ones to see how small changes can impact their energy consumption and overall ecological footprint. Calculating both the energy and money saved incorporates an example of a math problem that they may face in life. Additionally, this project will provide students with information to help them make informed and empowered decisions as they begin to face obstacles in the real world.
