Service learning projects have the ability to make topics students learn about real to them. They have the ability to allow students to make a difference in their community and allow them to educate those around them. My AP Environmental Science class does both a local and a global service learning project each year in conjunction with AP College Board and the WE service learning organization; it is called AP with WE. We chose the topic of "Access to Clean Water" this school year. My students are broken up into 10 service learning project teams and choose the avenue they would like to research and approach this issue in their local community. Water quality in their local community is the issue my students are tackling for their service learning projects. In researching what they would need to investigate this specific focus for each of their projects, they determined they needed water testing kits for certain contaminants, such as nitrates, pesticides, and bacteria. However, due to school funding, "red tape" and even time constraints, ordering any type of kits through the school would not get them their supplies to complete their projects in time. Also, being in a Title 1 inner city school, the majority of my students and their families cannot afford the luxury of purchasing any such kit on their own. Having these water testing kits will help my environmentally passionate and inquisitive students advance their learning on water quality issues and help them to teach their community about how to make a positive difference towards their local water systems.
