I teach a class called Literature of the American Dream. We read some classic stories that follow the American Dream through history: We start with O Pioneers! by Willa Cather and end with Behold the Dreamers by Mbolo Imbue. I would love to teach The Great Gatsby in this class, as it is the classic rags to riches story. Yet I love how it shows that money does not always equate happiness. Some may say that the American Dream does not exist anymore, but I want to instill hope in my students, so they can believe in the future, and believe in the American dream that anyone can be successful, no matter what circumstances they were born into.
