In addition to information literacy our Pk-5 media center strives to provide access to 9 STEM stations that promote authentic learning through high interest activities that promote STEM. We use LEGOS to spark interest and then guide students to books and other information in the area of STEM . Having LEGOS available in the media center in a space that is offered daily promotes inquiry based learning , authentic exploration and understanding of concepts critical to STEM education. So many of our low income families can not provide these kinds of learning tools for their children. LEOGS in the library provides equal access to all 620 K-5 students as they develop their love for STEM concepts. The LEGO WeDo 2.0 Core Set contains all of the building elements required to build collaborative projects that literally allow children to give power to their LEGOS. Providing access to this set allows students to put those aspects of scientific discovery to work by solving real STEAM problems. Using LEGO bricks, sensors, and motors, students can ignite their creativity, develop critical-thinking skills, and simply get hands-on STEAM experience. The Simple Machine LEGOS set includes gears, levers, pulleys, wheels and axles. This set will be excellent in providing exploration into how simple machines work. LEGOS in the library make it possible for for low income children to have daily access to learning STEM concepts that they would not otherwise have the opportunity to experience.
