I want my students to learn how to love and be empathetic towards each other and all living things. My students don't always get all the love and support they should, nor have they all learned to give love and empathy. Thus, I want to have a class pet in my classroom that my students can name, bond with, and love! In addition to the emotional benefits, my students will benefit academically from having a class pet. We study heredity in 5th grade in which the students will learn about adaptation, species, instinct, specialized structures etc. Having a live animal will be a great enhancement to our science content. I surprised them as a Christmas/Holiday gift with hermit crabs (which is the pet that was approved through our district), but upon further research learned that I should have purchased a glass tank, and a couple other supplies that allow the hermit crabs to truly thrive.
