Since many of our students are dropped off an hour before school starts, the comfortable seating and interesting reading materials will encourage students to use this time to develop reading skills and explore life through reading. In an attempt to address the National Literacy Trust's findings that nearly twice as many boys as girls say they do not enjoying reading at all, many of the books we are ordering are specifically designed to "hook" our boys and engage them in relevant or appealing topics. Providing the students with Big Joe bean bag chairs and a supply of high-interest books allows students to utilize extra time they have at school to read. This supports teaching best practices. These students will be excited to have a special reading lounge provided just for them and will support developing reading habits that last a life time.
