Having access to a classroom library is crucial to growing readers. In fact, explicit instruction coupled with time in text are two of the most important factors in helping students learn to read and to thrive as readers. Our current library is in need of books that reflect the identities of our students as well as books that they can read on their independent level. Lots of independent practice is necessary for students to make progress and build their comprehension skills. In particular, having access to book series is a great way for beginning readers to develop more complex understandings of characters, settings, and plot development. Additionally, we need more books so that our students can borrow books from our classroom library to take home each night to further encourage reading growth. Students are encouraged to build a connection at home with shared reading experiences. Students can demonstrate their knowledge at home while also building a shared love for books with their families!
