This year I will be teaching a Reader's Workshop class. My students will learn how to pick out books of their own and I will teach them the procedures, expectations, and skills for successful independent reading. In addition to this, we will be engaged in text-set based units of study where all students will be reading the same book. Our school does not provide these class set texts. I really would like students to get a physical novel that they can use to read, pull out text based evidence, and analyze. This Outsiders is a captivating book that tells the story of Ponyboy, a 14 year old, who is growing up during the 1950s. He is part of a Greaser gang that is at odds with the Socials gang. This novel will be powerful for my 6th graders because it deals with social and personal identity, family and friendships, and the sad outcomes of violence. During the unit, the students will use the novel as a tool to learn about story elements, conflict, theme, characters, and plot. Also, they will be given the opportunity to engage in a rich text and lessons that are aligned to the Missouri State Standards.
