Have you ever sat in a classroom with 20 kindergarteners? Let me paint the picture of what it's like. Half of the class is completing their independent work while two students need help tying their shoe, three students are using shapes to create something cool, a few students are brainstorming ways to reuse recycled items, and the rest are taking turns on the two computers. Kindergartners are like sponges, they are eager to learn any and everything they can, and I truly believe the more I expose my students to the more advanced they will be in first grade. My students are not afraid to ask questions. When something sparks their interest I use that moment as a teachable moment. We look things up on the internet and I usually will go to the library to find a book that relates to what we looked up. I want my students to know and understand that I appreciate them navigating their way on the internet to seek the answer to their question or find images to show them something they aren't familiar with. With technology being so advanced students have answers to questions at their fingertips, but with limited access to internet capable devices, only a few students are able to explore and take advantage of resources simultaneously. My students have made so much progress with their vocabulary exposure so far this year, but imagine how much more they could progress if more students were able to access the internet at the same time as their peers. If you were to walk into my classroom you would be amazed by the intriguing conversations my kindergarteners have with one another. Technically they are kindergarteners, but with your help with funding more technology, they will be advanced first graders.
