We begin our day with a whole-group collaborative learning session, during which I unpack a particular learning standard. I will use the lined easel paper and poster markers to create anchor charts explaining our learning standards, and will post them around the room for students to reference throughout the year. The majority of our day takes place during individualized pathway learning times, where students use technology to work on standards at their own developmental pace. For example, one student might be working on basic addition and subtraction skills, while another student who has mastered those might be doing measurement problems, and a third student could be practicing real world design skills using measurements. We have a class set of laptops on which students are able to do this all at the same time. They are taking ownership of their learning, but we need headphones so students can focus on their personal activities without being distracted by what their peers are learning. The paper, markers, and sticky tack will be used during team-building small group activities.
