Providing our students with the ability to move around and be comfortable encourages student behaviors in a positive way. The less that students have to sit still in a hard seat the more they can focus on what they are being expected to learn. "There is a neurological pathway that goes form your body's balance and movement system to your alert system in your brain, movement actually allows for alertness and attention." (Diana Henry" When students are not able to move and activate their brain, learning cannot occur. Each student moves in a different way and requires a differentiated environment. Not one person thinks in the same way or learns just like another. Providing students the opportunity to learn in a way that is suitable for them will encourage growth and a chance to understand their own learning styles. This type of understanding is carried on throughout all their education and into adulthood. The flexible seating we are requesting for our classroom will be in combination with the flexible seating that is already being used. Currently we do not have enough seating for each student to have a choice. The goal of this project is to provide the option of choice based on the movement they would enjoy. We are requesting wobble chairs, rocking chairs, bean bags, etc. These types of seats will allow students to sit comfortably and learn. The amount of seats requested will allow each of our 33 students to have a choice in their learning by selecting which seat they would like to use throughout the year. Most of the seats requested can also be moved from one area to another, which would be great for our students as we move from the chairs to the carpet and around the room regularly.
