I have carefully chosen an array of amazing titles in Spanish for my students to enjoy reading and checking out of my classroom library. I can't tell you the number of times I have had to tell some of them that they are not ready to read Wonder or Captain Underpants in English. I have conferred with my students and I know the title of the books that will hold their attention and inspire them. Those books are in my shopping cart hoping to be donated. I wish I could purchase these books for my students but it is just not feasible for me. Dreaming of a text rich classroom library with a 3rd graders favorites and inspirational stories is my goal. Sure, I have had many books donated to me over the years but they are in English. The Spanish books donated to us by the Bilingual Department in the past are not the best selling books that hold their interest and some not at their reading ability. I have also chosen some amazing stories that cover important social justice issues. For example, Malala and her Magic Pencil. We did a study on Malala and how she helped change her community. I know my students will love reading this adorable picture book. Several of the books I chose are graphic novels (Sisters-Hermanas, Smile-Sonrie) that the students love to read. I am certain these and other books I chose will enrich the literacy of my students and make life long readers out of them.
