By middle school, a large number of my students have lost their love of reading. Sadly, many others have never discovered it. Video games and web surfing have become the new pastime time for teenagers. Through the use of highly engaging picture books, I can help students discover and develop reading skills that they lack or help build their reading skills to take them to the next level. Picture books are not just highly engaging because of their vivid pictures, but they are also highly effective in helping my Special Education students and English Langauge Learners with vocabulary development while providing a scaffold for their reading comprehension. Many of the titles I have selected are also useful in teaching social skills and character education. This is especially important for my students with behavioral challenges. These books are also a perfect way to model writing. Full of rich language and sentence variations, they are a perfect model for mentor sentences. They provide students with great examples of what engaging and cohesive writing looks like and sounds like. In addition, the Jenga Reading Towers I will create will help foster conversations between group members about their reading using the stacked tower. Each block in the Reading Tower of Comprehension will be numbered and will require students to respond to the text in a meaningful way while making their reading task fun and engaging and helping student foster communication skills.
