Developing fitness programs for students with special needs is extremely important. Historically students with special needs are inherently overweight, out of shape, and at high risk of cardiovascular disease and diabetes. Statistics have shown that these groups experience increased rates of disease related to poor eating habits and physical inactivity. These groups of students also lack the skills to plan lifelong fitness activities, and display gross motor deficiencies. There are many factors affecting our students’ levels of fitness. This includes but not limited to sedentary home life styles, improper dietary habits, socio-economics, demographics, disability, medication, physical limitations, and cognitive limitations. Research has shown that a good physical education program, such as the implementation of CrossFit, may help control and reverse obesity, depression, and chronic diseases such as high blood pressure, cardiovascular disease, and childhood diabetes. Additionally, a California Department of Education research study has concluded that healthy and physically fit students perform better academically. With the help of these "Assault Bikes" we will continue developing an innovative fitness program that will assist in facilitating the development of functional body movements and to continue enabling students with special needs to safely and successfully participate in lifelong fitness activities with minimum amount of support.
